It's often been said that children are't born with instruction manuals. This is obviously true, although numerous authors, doctors, and psychologists have attempted to fill that gap. There is so great a volume of child rearing and child discipline books published that it can get pretty confusing, especially, for an already overwhelmed, perhaps new, parent who barely has the time to read them. If they do manage to read them they will find numerous conflicting points of view on how to do just about everything. When an actual issue arrises it helps to have someone with actual childcare experience to answer questions. That is one piece of what I do, help parents apply and modify practical techniques to hel their particular child.
The other part is helping parents train and supervise new nannies, or overcome an exsisting issue with an otherwise great nanny. Starting out as a new nanny is similar to starting out as a new parent - the resources can be very confusing. During my 14 years of working with children and families most of my training happened on the job with the help of parents, teachers, psychologists, and more experiened nannies. This was supplemented with coursework focussing on child psychology and developmentally-appropriate discipline techniques. Parents I have worked with have appreciated my knowledge base, patience with children, and willingness to teach others how to tackle the difficult situations.
Feel free to contact me with questions or check in on my blog for articles on various types of issues!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Cote (the Nanny Coach)
